SDO provides Rio-Tinto with space-saving optical solution for current measurement at Boyne Island smelter
September 2009
Smart Digital Optics (SDO), the chosen supplier of Rio Tinto Aluminium, has commissioned a three-phase optical fibre current transformer system (SA1T) in the upgrade of their Boyne Island Smelter - increasing the capacity at Australia’s largest aluminium smelter.
Rio Tinto needed a solution for the measurement of harmonic currents on the 132KV bus between their harmonic filter banks, which would deliver unparalleled performance and be suitable for the harsh environment of the Gladstone region, Queensland.
61850-9-2 Process Bus installation with optical current sensors at Powerlink's Braemar Substation
September 2009

Smart Digital Optics (SDO) and Powerlink Queensland have completed a 330kV 3- phase installation using the SDO SA1T optical fibre current sensor system at Powerlink’s Braemar substation. The installation includes 3 SDO 330kV optical fibre current transformers (SA1T) and an SDO IEC-61850-9-2 digital interface (SD3TM).
SDO Awarded Australian Technology Showcase Membership

Smart Digital Optics Pty Ltd (SDO), a leading manufacturer and supplier of digital and fibre optic solutions for the electric power and smelting industries, proudly announces being awarded Australian Technology Showcase (ATS) membership. ATS recognises and promotes leading-edge technology with most potential to penetrate domestic and global markets and is a great achievement for SDO to be included into that category.
SDO was founded in 2004 to supply optical current sensors that are smaller, lighter, and more accurate, has a wider dynamic range and cannot lead to explosive breakdown, unlike its conventional counterpart. SDO’s optical current sensors are in use in several industrial sites including Xstrata copper smelter in Townsville, Rio Tinto Alcan in Gladstone and Bell Bay as well as Alcoa World Alumina in Point Henry. Others are scheduled to be installed at Power Link in Queensland and at Arteche sites in Spain and Mexico.

SDO Introduces Portable DC Current Sensor
31 Jul 2007 10:14 am
SDO has recently introduced it's new SDP line of portable current sensor systems. These systems provide .2% accuracy in a portable format which is suitable for calibration of existing sensors or as a temporary backup during maintenance or replacement. This system uses a 6m flexibale rugged sensing fibre which can be installed on a live bus.
